I never expected anything extraordinary to happen in that quiet little flat. Days passed like slow-moving clouds, with my world contained within four walls and long silences. I kept to myself. He kept to his. We were two quiet planets in the same orbit, never colliding — until that afternoon.

I had gone to the kitchen to fill my water bottle. A simple task. My thoughts were on the dripping tap and the hum of the refrigerator when suddenly I heard his voice behind me.

“Will you be my girlfriend?”

I froze, the bottle slipping from my hands and rolling toward the sink. I turned around slowly. He was standing there — awkward, unsure, and yet strangely calm — his eyes locked onto mine like he was trying to understand a language I wasn’t speaking.

I didn’t say anything. What could I say? No one had ever asked me that so suddenly, without even a build-up. Then he asked again, and again. His voice wasn’t forceful, just… persistent. Like he was testing the waters of courage, each time a little bolder than the last.

Scared and confused, I finally asked, “What if I say no?”

He didn’t answer. He stepped aside toward the door, and I let out a breath, thinking it was over. But then he turned… and locked the door.

I panicked.

The moment he gently pushed me back against the wall and stood silently in front of me, my thoughts spiraled into chaos. His eyes didn’t wander. They didn’t threaten. They simply looked, like he was trying to hear my heartbeat through the air between us.

And I fainted.

When I woke up, I was in my room, wrapped in a blanket. The fan was spinning lazily above me, and a quiet stillness had returned to the flat. My door was open slightly — not locked, not closed. He was gone.

I lay there, staring at the ceiling, trying to process everything. The fear had faded, replaced by confusion. He could have done anything. But he didn’t. He simply… waited. And when I fainted, he must have carried me to my room, tucked me in, and left.

That quiet, cautious care unsettled me more than anything.

For days, we didn’t speak. We didn’t cross paths. I thought of leaving, of reporting something — but what exactly would I report? That he asked me a question and then stared too long?

One evening, I found a note slipped under my door. It read:

“I’m sorry I scared you. I didn’t mean to. I didn’t know how else to ask… or how to tell you that I’ve noticed you since the day we moved in. Not the way you look, but how you carry your silence like armor. I guess I just wanted to be seen by you, once.”

I read it a dozen times. Then folded it, unfolded it, and folded it again.

The next day, I left a reply on the kitchen table.

“I don’t know how to talk about these things. But I’m listening now.”

We didn’t rush into conversations. At first, it was shared silence while making tea. Then a nod in the hallway. Slowly, it turned into shy greetings, then laughter over burnt toast, then late-night talks at the kitchen table about everything — music, childhood, fears, books, and the things we never told anyone.

He never brought up that afternoon again. Neither did I. But the moment changed us. It was as if something cracked open between us, and light found its way in.

Months passed.

He never asked again if I’d be his girlfriend.

One rainy evening, as we stood by the window watching the drops race each other down the glass, I whispered, almost too quietly to hear:

“If you ask me again now… I might say yes.”

He turned, surprised, eyes wide. But he didn’t smile, didn’t rush. He just took my hand and held it gently, as if he was afraid I’d disappear.

“No,” he said softly. “This time, I won’t ask. I’ll wait until you say it first.”

I did.

Eventually.

And when I did, it was not because I was scared — but because I was safe.

And sometimes, that’s where the deepest kind of love begins.
